“Yes. Two years. I tried to explain that to you Friday night, but you wouldn’t hear me out. I tried to respond by email, but you blocked me.”

After an extended silence, Malachi spoke, "You still there?"

"Yeah, I'm here." She felt ten-karat stupid. "I apologize, Malachi. I should’ve —”

“Asia, there’s no need to apologize. You based your perception of me on what you heard someone else say, never giving me the chance to explain. Doesn't matter now. It's past.”

Salima had finished showering. She stopped in the doorway, watching Malachi, who was unaware of her presence.

“I feel like such a fool,” Asia said. “I should’ve heard it from you rather than someone else.”

“You should always get your info from the horse’s mouth."

“God! Haven’t I heard that before,” Asia responded with uncomfortable laughter.

“So,” he continued. “What else is going on?”

“Well, I want us to get to know each other.”

“Ah, wow. I'm past that, sista. We can be cool. I've moved on."

"Really? That was fast."

"Maybe. When a man knows what he wants, what he needs, he goes and gets it. When it walks unto his path, he grabs it. Dig?"

"Yeah, yeah," she replied attempting to hide her hurt feelings and stunned ego. "I dig."
